Hand-knotted in wool and originating from Russia circa 1920-1930, this collectible 4x5 antique rug is a very rare Caucasian rug of the titular Seychour (sometimes spelled Zeikhour) provenance, considered by some in our field to be a subclass of the Kuba rug lineage.
On the Design
Connoisseurs will admire this outstanding antique Seychour rug—a one-of-a-kind masterpiece new to the collection. Designers and admirers of the craft alike will particularly appreciate its size—one of the best and most versatile one can find in antique rugs of its period that lends to so many spaces today. Animal rugs and similar pictorials are are in any provenance, and this is among the most exceptional we’ve seen among folk art of the late 19th and early 20th century Here, a palette of teal blue, red, beige, and white tones underscores an almost abstract approach to illustration, where four foxes in running poses are depicted under a blue sky with abundant floral patterns in the field and border alike. Keen eyes will further note a minimalist approach to the paisley (or boteh) pattern in the field.
While hunting rugs, as these are sometimes known in Caucasian and Persian rugs of varied provenances, have been known to depict similar creatures, this rug’s particular choices in illustration and execution are one of a kind—yet exemplary of works from the caucus in their personal nature, as much iconic heirlooms of folk art as they are rugs teeming with life and personality
Condition:
This antique Seychour rug further enjoys good condition for its age and lineage, with exceptionally minimal wear consistent with its age—both ready for the floor and equally suitable in its size and sensibility to wall-hanging projects as well. less
