Unique and unusual Magneto floor lamp, designed by Gilbert Watrous (1918-1991) for the 1951 design competition organized by MOMA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The lamp was first produced by the American company Heifetz and then also in the 1950s by the Dutch company Atelier Artiforte, led by Hendrik Fillekes (1918-1983), who produced some variants of this wonderful timeless design and turned it into a unique piece. really special since it was manufactured in a short period of time during the 1950s with very little production and assembly done by hand.
This lamp stands out for its elegant, straight lines that connect its long chrome arm to a spherical magnet, hence the name 'Magneto'. Thanks to this perfectly balanced and aligned design, the lamp can be oriented and moved to any point, offering functional and omnidirectional light.
The importance and rarity of this gem of mid-century design that we present is underlined by its cylindrical shade with a translucent back, which appears to show an eye when lit, illuminating two points at once and creating exceptional ambient light. Its base is also different from those that can be found on other documented Magneto lamp models. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
