Set of four chairs, model 055, designed by pierre jeanneret circa 1950, relaunched in 2019. Manufactured by cassina in italy. This chair is one of the most recognizable in chandigarh’s capitol complex, found throughout the offices of the secretariat. The independent pieces, including the side bars in an inverted “v” supporting the armrests, are all made of solid wood. The woven backrest and seat, stretched across a wooden frame, are elements common in the area, much like the use of local woods like teak. Similar to the better-known office chair, this armless chair also uses the “v” approach to sidebars, in this case shorter as they do not extend to the arms. Importance, instead, is given to the seating or backrest sequence in viennese woven cane, connected with an immense geometric section supported by two wooden profiles, and coplanar legs, that together, are simple and yet, powerful at the same time. These product is a tribute to pierre jeanneret, a key figure in the realization of chandigarh. His experience in india lasted until the end of his days in 1967. His close and continuous contact with the local territory led him to combine essential forms with simple materials to create a meeting point between modern european ideals and the traditional indian spirit. The chandigarh project is considered le corbusier’s most mature work that summarizes his poetics, technique and ideology, consistent with his will to research and contribute to the culture of architecture and design. Materials: wood. Backrest and seat in indian cane. Upholstered cushion. We try to edit our photos to show all of our products as life-like as possible, but please understand the actual color may vary slightly from your monitor about the designer: though overshadowed by his cousin le corbusier, pierre jeanneret was a visionary of modernist architecture and design. Together, the pair pioneered a new aesthetic vocabulary that placed function and order over embellishment, jeanneret’s work imbuing the strict geometry of modernism with energetic diagonals and lighter materials like cane and wood. A consistent innovator, he collaborated with charlotte perriand on experiments in aluminum and wood, and developed prefabricated housing with jean prouvé. In the early 1950s jeanneret joined his cousin in chandigarh, india, where they embarked on a massive urban-planning project, laying out the city and designing low-cost buildings and furniture. Though corbusier abandoned the project halfway through, jeanneret remained for 15 years as the project’s chief architect. The city remains a masterpiece of the modern vision. About the manufacturer: in a continuing dialogue between past, present, and future, cassina has created the i maestri collection, revisiting furnishing designs by the twentieth century’s best-known architects, including le corbusier, pierre jeanneret, charlotte perriand, charles rennie mackintosh, gerrit thomas rietveld, franco albini, frank lloyd wright and marco zanuso. While the designs and functional concepts have been precisely preserved, the models have been manufactured using evolved technology. This is also the company that has manufactured iconic pieces of contemporary design from the 1950s to the present day, ideated by some of the most important international designers. Today cassina continues to look to the future of design with audacious, passionate curiosity and an open, holistic approach. It affirms its exclusive ability to furnish a home’s living and dining spaces completely and iconically with the cassina perspective: a concept, a philosophy, an informed, futuristic thought. A detailed, expansive horizon of combinations; when placed together, the products have an innovative soul and the modern icons create authentic, welcoming, personal atmospheres involved in a conversation dominated by a code of design excellence, formal sensitive awareness, solidity and cultural authority.
