Charlotte perriand indochine armchair manufactured by cassina in italy this swivel armchair is a re-working of the lc7, whose frame was in tubular metal, and was the work of charlotte perriand in 1927. It was later exhibited along with other furniture that perriand co-designed with le corbusier and pierre jeanneret for the 1929 salon d’automne in paris. The original design was executed in vietnam in 1943, using the materials and crafts techniques available during that war-time period. The first model had three legs, with a fourth added later. This piece reflects the designer’s flexible and resourceful approach: she often adapted her designs according to the availability of materials and where production was to take place. Cassina has re-issued indochine in the full respect of the original design, interpreting it, and incorporating a solid wood base that highlights the excellence of the company craftsmen’s wood-working skills. Designed in 1943 by charlotte perriand, this timeless design chair is the interpretation in wood of the lc7 modern chair in tubular metal designed by the same author. The chair was designed in vietnam, making use of the materials and artisan techniques that could be found during the war. “what could be sweeter than to touch a polished fir table top, smooth as a woman’s legs?”, remarked charlotte perriand, who often adapted her designs to the materials available and to the places of production. The swivel armchair was reinterpreted by cassina while staying true to the original design, with exquisite solid wood construction in which the company’s artisanal excellence and attention to every joinery detail are evident. Together, the pair pioneered a new aesthetic vocabulary that placed function and order over embellishment—jeanneret’s work imbuing the strict geometry of modernism with energetic diagonals and lighter materials like cane and wood. A consistent innovator, he collaborated with charlotte perriand on experiments in aluminum and wood, and developed prefabricated housing with jean prouvé. In the early 1950s jeanneret joined his cousin in chandigarh, india, where they embarked on a massive urban-planning project, laying out the city and designing low-cost buildings and furniture. Though corbusier abandoned the project halfway through, jeanneret remained for 15 years as the project’s chief architect. The city remains a masterpiece of the modern vision. About the manufacturer: in a continuing dialogue between past, present, and future, cassina has created the i maestri collection, revisiting furnishing designs by the twentieth century’s best-known architects, including le corbusier, pierre jeanneret, charlotte perriand, charles rennie mackintosh, gerrit thomas rietveld, franco albini, frank lloyd wright and marco zanuso. While the designs and functional concepts have been precisely preserved, the models have been manufactured using evolved technology.
