"The origin of the blue glazes is thought to lie in Iraq, when craftsmen in Basra sought to imitate imported white Chinese stoneware with their own tin-glazed, white pottery and added decorative motifs in blue glazes.[1] Such Abbasid-era pieces have been found in present-day Iraq, dating to the 9th century A.D., decades after a direct sea route was opened from Iraq to China.[2]"
The Pillow: "The word pillow comes from Middle English pilwe, from Old English pyle (akin to Old High German pfuliwi) and from Latin pulvinus. The first known use of the word pillow was before the 12th century."
"Dynasty (618-907). They were used to cushion patients' wrists when Chinese doctors checked their pulses before giving diagnoses and to support the arms of those writing with brushes to help give them a steadier hand. Additionally, travelers started carrying small porcelain pillows as sleeping aids.
"The Song Dynasty (960-1279) saw Chinese ceramics and porcelain pillows flourish. The pillows grew larger in size and production scale while new manufacturing techniques, designs, and decorations emerged"
They were the ultimate cool aid.
"The hot summer nights in southern China led to a surge in products designed to cool the bed, including ceramic pillows, which were also believed to keep the eyes healthy. In his poem Thanks to Master Huang for the Green Porcelain Pillow, poet Zhang Lei of the Northern Song dynasty wrote: ‘Pillow made by Gong is strong and blue; an old friend gave it to me to beat the heat; it cools down the room like a breeze; keeping my head cool while I sleep’. The poem not only highlights the efficiency of ceramic pillows as cooling aids, but also reflects how appreciated they were by members of the Song literati." less
