Howard Webster Pierce attended the Art Institute of Chicago and University of Illinois. After he moved to Claremont, California, in 1934, Pierce continued his studies at Pomona College.

After working for William Manker Ceramics in Claremont and freelancing for other California potteries such as Kay Smith, Pierce established his La Verne, California, studio in 1941. His initial efforts focused on the production of pewter and copper finished pins.

After working as a draftsman during World War II, Pierce converted his studio in 1945 to produce ceramics using Florida china clay, Kentucky/Tennessee ball clay, feldspar, and potash. He also used a porcelain material known as nepheline syenite instead of feldspar.

Pierce handled all aspects of his pottery – design, mold making, selection of clay and glazes, and firing. Many pieces have brown or white satin glaze. N.S. Gustin marketed his products nationally. Although producing some dinnerware and high gloss planters and vases, Pierce is best known for his bird, human, marine and wildlife figures. Some pieces were produced in small numbers. In production for over 50 years, Pierce remained a small home-based business.

In 1941, Howard married Ellen Van Voorhis, an art teacher and graduate of the Chicago Art Institute. They worked together as a team. The Pierce children—Janet, Linda, and Jerry—also worked at the pottery. Pierce’s contract with Gustin ended in 1966.

In 1968, the Pierces moved to a new home/studio in Joshua Tree, near Palm Springs. The desert locale and Mojave Desert inspired his designs. In that same year, he began creating large concrete statues, some close to 12 feet high, for permanent installation. Most are located in or in close proximity to Joshua Tree.

Pierce partially retired in 1992, still creating some new pieces. He died in 1994. less
