Impressionist oil painting by Henri Francois (1925-1998) of rural work life or post-war reconstruction depicts workers or military officers repairing a fence, done in a loose impressionist style. The predominant colors are mauve, lavender, peach, and slate blue. It is signed in the bottom left corner. Sold in its original mid-century frame, which is thick carved wood painted antique white that has been distressed along the raised edges and corners to reveal a gold giltwood layer underneath, which provides a subtle shimmer.
Henri L Francois was an internationally known Dutch artist who exhibited in Europe extensively and came to the United States in 1957, settling in Hermosa Beach and exhibiting widely in Southern California between 1962 and 1974.
