Late 19th century, all handmade, gold metallic thread hand-embroidered eagle on kesho-mawashi (ceremonial apron). This is a kesho mawashi offered to a wrestler who was sponsored by feudal daimyo or overlords. Japanese eagle/falconry was practiced by emperors, courtiers, and later by the samurai class well into the Edo period.
Design is three-dimensional, the eye of the eagle is made of real glass. Knotting, tassels, embroidery are all handmade.
Textile is wool felt. Other parts are cotton or hemp.
This is a collectors’ item, authentic and unique. Many different factors determine prices. First: age, rarity, and condition. Second: aesthetics. Japanese kimono, traditional clothing and accessories prices can vary as much as do prices on paintings. Thus, beautiful and rare Japanese items command a premium.
Condition: Very good for an antique historical unique piece (there is only one similar found at the metropolitan Museum in New York). There are some holes in the felt, inherent with natural fiber and age, two tassels are missing and some loose stitching, but all these make the object more appealing and valuable.
Dimensions: Approx. 14 inches x 14.25 inches (34 x 36 cm).
Provenance: Maeda family private collection (Japan, Nagasaki prefecture).
