Northwood’s Tree Trunk pattern comes exclusively in vases. The pattern is distinguished by its irregularly spaced hobs and short crescent shapes distributed between the hobs. The hobs are surrounded by curly lines; these semi-circles or squiggles have been described as looking like “tadpoles”. Of note, the Tree Trunk vase is found in the Butler Bros Catalog from 1909 to 1915. The various versions of Tree Trunk vases are determined by the base size and not by the height of the pieces. If the Northwood trademark is missing, as it well may be, since far from all of the Northwood pieces were marked, to verify authenticity in the Tree Trunk pattern vase, look for the row of raised dots around the base. Also note that a standard size vase base diameter will measure between 3¼” to 3¾”. Lastly, one of the fascinating aspects of swung vases is that no two are alike! This beauty measures 10½” high. On the underside of the base there is a 30-point ray; base diameter measures 3 11/16”. The 12-point flamed rim diameter is 4¼”; weight 1 lb. 1 oz. The vase is in excellent condition. There are random inclusions that are mostly indiscernible, original to the manufacturer as a result of the manufacturing process. I photographed the vase in the round to show the all sides and the nuances of the pattern and coloring throughout the body. For a collector of Northwood vases or opalescent glass, this beauty should be a must have.
