Evocative portrait of Scottish gentleman by David Nicholas Ingles Ingres ARHA (Associate member) (Scottish, 1888-1933), circa 1920. Signed lower right corner with "ARHA" Associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy. Condition: Three minor tears professionally repaired and in-painted. Unframed. Image size: 40"H x 30"W.
David Nicholson Ingles was born in Selkirk in Scotland in 1888, the youngest child of his parents. In the Census of 1891, they were living at Forest View, Forest Road, Selkirk, and were still there in 1901. By 1917, David was in Dublin and is sometimes referred to as an Irish artist. In 1919, the year he painted this portrait, he was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. He was a portrait painter. By 1930, he was back in London, where he died in Edmonton in 1933, at the very young age of 45.
He exhibited four paintings at the Royal Scottish Academy, one at the Glasgow Institute, one at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, and 25 at the Royal Hibernian Academy. He has one portrait in the National Collection, which is a portrait of William Booth, hanging in the National Portrait Gallery and one portrait owned by the National Trust, at Castle Ward, County Down. less
