This exquisite … more Antique Chinese hand-carved traveling dowry chest from the 19th century with fretwork panels, gilt characters and brass ornaments. This exquisite Chinese dowry chest features a linear wooden structure, beautifully accented with black painted fretwork motifs and hand-carved panels, adorned with delicate characters. The front of the piece is removable and opens to a compartment meant to receive clothing and household linens, with shelf supports on the sides. This façade is adorned with black painted fretwork, serving as a perfect background for the gilt characters to stand out beautifully. Each panel shows two characters, standing on lovely clouds. The delicacy of their treatment only equals the skill shown in their execution. The pierced cornice creates a perfect conclusion to the ensemble. The side panels are adorned with delightful floral carvings set within geometrical motifs accented with brass ornaments and C-scroll handles.
