Stunning piece from Hoi Lebadang's (1921-2015) "Espaces" series, which is considered his major work. The 1980's "Espaces" (spaces) was created by combining various techniques that included collage and superimposition. This resulted in finished bas-relief works that had highly sculptural qualities. Lebadang used paper made especially for him at the Moulin de Larroque (Larroque Mill in Couze, Dordogne, France), a thick, pure handmade rag paper. He tore up the paper by hand and joined the pieces together in superimposed layers to create a landscape with "relief", a landscape seen from the sky. "Espaces" grew from Lebadang's fascination with aerial views of the Nazca geoglyphs in Peru, and he felt that they created a bond between man and the cosmos. Lebadang partnered with Circle Fine Art's print workshops (New York and Chicago) for the creation of the series.
This piece contrasts warm red and coral hues with cool blue greens. The hand-torn, deckled edged piece measures 27" x 20" and is signed in pencil by Lebadang and is numbered 16/250. It is float mounted against an off-white linen canvas background within a 33" x 26 1/2" x 2 1/4" acryclic box and framed in a 33 1/2" x 27" gold aluminum frame. On the wall, it measures 33 1/2" x 27" x 3 1/4" and weighs 19 lbs.
This truly magnificent piece from one of the greatest printmakers of the 20th and 21st centuries will be carefully and securely packaged for shipment.
