Signed lower right, 'Wilh. A. Wrage' for Wilhelm August Wrage (German, 1861-1941) and dated 1920. Titled, verso, on canvas, 'Der Althandler', additionally signed with monogram and dated.
Provenance:
Kunstaustellung Berlin, 1920 (#797). Exhibited as a member of the Department of the Association of Berlin Artists (with Düsseldorf artists).
The collection of Lawrence Frederick, Berkeley, California.
Formerly with: Morse Antiques, Pasadena, California.
Brother of the artist Joachim Hinrich Wrage (1843-1912), a noted educator and exponent of plein-air painting, Wilhelm Wrage was first apprenticed to a painter in Hamburg (1876-1880). Following his apprenticeship, he studied at the Royal Museum of Decorative Arts in Berlin (1880-1882). He then apprenticed for three years as a painter's assistant in Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Switzerland and Hungary.
From 1885, Wrage was a partner in the painting company Gebr. Eilers in Berlin and, in 1890, co-founded his own company, Wrage & Rolff. In 1898, Wrage commenced his studies at the Berlin Royal Academy of Fine Arts, receiving a silver medal while there and graduating in 1900. During this period, he also won the public competition to paint the murals of the town hall in St. Johann an der Saar (now Saarbrücken).
In addition to his landscape and genre painting, Wrage was also an accomplished society portraitist and an elected member of both the Association of Berlin Artists and the Reich Association of Fine Artists of Germany. He exhibited widely and with success including at the 1933 Great Berlin Art Exhibition (Große Berliner Kunstausstellung).
We are please to offer an exceptional, exhibited oil that displays the best elements of both the artist's figural and genre subjects.
