An original watercolor painting on paper by Gabrielle Carelli, Italian artist 1820-1900, "A View From the Garden Terrace - 1867" scene of two women in front of a rounded corner of an Italian villa, one seated, one standing, a terrace trails in front of them. The terrace has several sculptures, several levels with a long stoa railing, conical trees and floral plantings. Beyond the terraces lie fields and the sea on a bright, sunny day.. 7 1/2" x 14 7/8". signed and dated in the lower right corner front. CA number 3946, CA purchased spring 2024 from a British auction house.
The watercolor has been surfaced cleaned, re-framed with White Museum matboard, lined, Museum Glass, museum backing and 1" original Abe Munn antiqued gold with black panel Italian reproduction moulding.
Carelli was born into an artistic dynasty in Naples, during he 1840's he went to England and received the patronage of the Duke of Devonshire. Early 1850's he returned to Italy but eventually returned to London and exhibited frequently from 1866 to 1892. He was admitted to the Royal Academy in 1874. In the early 1880's he came to the attention of Queen Victoria and enjoyed her favor and patronage for the rest of his career. less
