Erwin Wending (German/American, 1914-1993). Original acrylic painting, pencil signed and dated on verso. 'Acrobats', 1988. Very large at 50” x 52" unframed.
Wending was born in Germany at the turn of the 20th century into a Jewish family with a silk factory. He attended Dresden Art Academy before moving to Israel in 1937. Soon after he moved on to Paris and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He was warned of the impending German invasion and he left everything behind and fled to London in 1940. He received a grant to study at St. Martin’s College. He moved to New York in 1947.
His works have been widely exhibited in the UK, US and Israel. His painting ‘Fluchtlinge (Flucht nach oben)’, 1984 is currently exhibited in Israel’s Yad Vashem, The World’s Holocaust Remembrance Center as part of the ‘Virtues of Memory. Six Decades of Holocaust Survivors’ Creativity’ exhibition.
