Born in Russia in 1951, Antanenka went to art school in Brest and the Art Academy in Leningrad. He was known for his bright colors and soothing landscapes. After the Chernobyl disaster took both if his parents he became angry at the government's inefficiency in saving lives and subsequent coverup of the tragedy. He exiled himself to Magadan, Siberia and his works became dark to reflect his emotional state. Magadan was a place the government would exile artists, poets and politicians who did not reflect the party line. While he was here, his work gathered international interest, however the KGB did not allow him exhibitions at home or overseas. After the Soviet Union's collapse be moved to Belarus from where he was able to exhibit in many former Soviet cities in the 1990s. More recently, he moved to United States and his work once again reflects a feeling of happiness and peace. Antanenka's work is in private collections throughout Europe, Russia, Japan and the USA.
