Vintage C1950s-60s; Italian, hand-blown, solid and heavy Murano lion by Barovier' y Toso, in an mauve to eggplant color combination, with clear full bodied colorations, that are hand applied elements. Pontil is located to the front chest area as image indicates, why you ask, well the legs must have been pulled and left open during the blowing process, within the process of the body, being created and thus the opening for the legs, which once to desired thickness and length, in order to maintain the fluidity and smoothness of the entire body and legs, which left the "only," obvious location for the pontil. Reminiscent of Balloon made to look like animals twisted and contorted and bulbous. Once finished, the clear, hand applied feet, crimped design detail, as well as lion mane, also crimped to create the textural over detail, as the tail, made to be handled, as well as the relief details to the facial aspects, such as the eyes, nose, mouth and any other clear, hand applied aspects to this lion were apportioned in the final process. Incidentally the underside of each foot, also has that textured crimping, a perfect foil for the piece to not slide, but also unify the design esthetic incorporated in this stunning and heavy piece of art. Sometimes the glassblowers would make these animals, various types into wine carafe or decanters, and other times, as you see this piece, a monumental decorative accent piece, with full body and weight. The lion signifies strength and the patriarch of a family, as is this male Lion in wildlife.
