These are sometimes referred to … more Authentic bohemian vibes from this 1970s terracotta candle holder by Sam Calder (1916 - 1991). These are sometimes referred to as luminaria or candle cages. Wheel thrown and hand embellished with floral stamps and cutouts of crescent moons. Unglazed clay base with white lava glaze accents and an olive green speckled lip. Rimmed cup on the inside can be used for a votive or candle. Excellent vintage condition with no damage or issues. Measures 7 inches tall x 6.5 inches diameter.

Sam / Samuel Calder attended at Chouinard Art School in Los Angeles. He later worked for Walt Disney Studios, Huerta Design Studio, and the Fred Kopp Agency. He was also an accomplished photographer, and his photos inspired many of Norman Rockwell's illustrations. Calder was most active as a potter between 1968 - 1975; he and his wife had a pottery shop at Universal Studios where this was most likely acquired. less
