Comes from a limited … Read more An excellent vintage period offset lithograph, print, after oil painting Two Saltimbanques (1909) by Pablo Picasso. Comes from a limited edition of XVI prints from Picasso's Blue and Rose periods portfolio, published in the mid of 20th c. Printed on one side. Hand tipped-in on a board of heavy paper. Information regarding the original painting will be found by lifting the piece. Excellent condition - minor edge wear on the board, never framed.

This pastel has the spontaneity and charm of a rapid sketch. It's a modest work, casual and unpretentious. It offers a fresh variation on the theme of the two saltimbanques, a boy and an older man. There is no suggestion of sadness and, in comparison with Two Saltimbanques with a Dog (please see lithograph we are offering for sale at our Prints Shop on Chairish) there is little attenuation in the treatment of the figures.

The source of light is not the day but an artificial illumination from the right. The costumes and the chiaroscuro of the drawing also contribute to the sense of the theater. The brown tint of the paper itself supplies a curtain against which the changing values of blue and pink gracefully compliment each other. See less
