A limited edition stencil casting and print by the American artist Paul Maxwell (1925-2015). Signed to the lower right, the work features a stained glass style composition with colorful shapes interspersed within a black web-like design. White raised stencil cast shapes are used throughout the work. Numbered 47/100, the piece is displayed in a wooden frame and is mounted on a purple board and surrounded by a blue, black, and off-white mat.
Born in Frost Prairie, Arkansas, Maxwell did an undergraduate degree in art at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, graduating in 1950. After graduating, he moved to Southern California to do graduate work at Claremont College. During the early 1950s, Maxwell's work was exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and he had his first commercial gallery show. During the late 1950s, he moved to Texas and taught at the University of Houston and Houston Museum of Art. In the 1970s, Maxwell created and patented a new method of art-making called “stencil casting," also referred to as the “Maxwell Pochoir," in which a stencil is used to create raised and layered textured designs. He is also known as the creator of the “Max Wall," featured in the science fiction cult classic movie Logan’s Run, which was located in the West Atrium of the Dallas Apparel Mart. less
