The majority of Hackney's works are pictures of other people and the simple pleasures in life.
Much of Hockney's works are autobiographical but not because he believes in the superiority of himself, the artist. He recognizes that most of us believe that the most interesting things in the world are other people. Hockney's first etching "Myself and My Heroes" was created in 1961 as a test plate includes his own image as a awkward 23 year old paying homage to two men whose views of the world had consciously shaped his own they were, Walt Whitman and Mahatma Gandhi.
The second Etching wasn't produced until the end of his second year at the Royal College of Art.
His mock diploma of 1962 tells the story behind the threats of the college that wanted to deny him his official diploma because he refused to complete the general studies requirement, in which soon Hockney would create sequence of separate images along the lines of a comic strip in which three staff members including the principal are falling all over themselves to reverse their decision
in withholding his diploma.
