Lucien Adrion longed for movement all his life and never came to rest. His paintings were as driven as the artist himself, always throwing a unique spotlight on the inner and outer dynamics of human society and capturing its restlessness in a trenchant snapshot. Lucien Adrion was born in Strasbourg on May 25, 1889. At the age of 18, he left his hometown and moved to Paris to work temporarily as a fashion illustrator. He then traveled to London, Munich and Frankfurt, where he was surprised by the outbreak of the First World War. As he was unable to leave Germany due to his demobilization, Lucien Adrion went to Berlin, where he became a student in the studio of Hermann Struck, who also taught Marc Chagall. It was only after the war that Lucien Adrion was allowed to return to Paris; now 30 years old, he created a series of signed lithographs that were well received. He also had his first solo exhibition in Paris in February 1921, which was organized for him by the art dealer Chéron. Lucien Arion set up a studio in the famous artists' quarter of Montparnasse and subsequently cultivated fruitful acquaintances with young Eastern European painters such as Pinchus Kremegne, Michel Kikoïne and Chaim Soutine. Like many artists, Lucien Adrion suffered from a restless nature, which soon drove him away from his otherwise secure existence. It was only in Normandy that Adrion found the inspiration he had been looking for and turned to landscape painting. This new course was immediately crowned with success and gave Adrion an unexpected boost in popularity. The art world finally took notice of the young painter, who was allowed to exhibit for the first time at the famous Salon des Indépendants in 1926 at the age of 37. Success stayed with Adrion - in the 1940s, he finally had exhibitions at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tulleries. Born in Alsace, Adrion, who had long German roots and was not really recognized in his native France for a long time, was now considered a national artist of the first rank in his country and enjoyed a brilliant reputation.
Lucien Adrion's special talent lay in capturing and depicting entire sequences of movement. Although he was a painter and not a filmmaker, he succeeded in capturing complex human dynamics in a single picture so pointedly that the viewer could see the entire chain of events at a glance.
