Peculiar and interesting pair of Italian bedside tables in walnut; on each bedside table, an elegant black glass is housed on the top shelf; the space below is efficient and functional; the large lower compartment is closed by two doors, and inside is divided by a useful shelf; very elegant is the workmanship below the doors that serves as a base for the bedside table; the same doors have been cleverly hinged on the side of the bedside table. The handles, in burnished brass, are not from the period but replaced at a later time. The nightstands were created, between 1930 and 1935, in an artisan workshop in Cantù, a city located in the province of Como in Lombardy (Italy), renowned over time for its tradition in the production of luxury furniture and long considered an important center for furniture craftsmanship with a reputation established over the years in the creation of high-quality pieces. Cantù companies have always supplied furniture for a high-end clientele, which included both private individuals and luxury furniture projects for hotels, restaurants, and prestigious residences around the world. The nightstands were made from regular walnut wood, then a veneer was made, unusually strong and sturdy with a superior quality of walnut, the best part of the wood "Juglans regia" called "national walnut "or "European walnut" was used. Walnut (Juglans regia) is a valuable, expensive hardwood; its colors, flaming, and grain have been appreciated for centuries. It is a wood that is unparalleled in its aesthetic appearance. Walnut furniture is highly sought after but also expensive because the usable wood part in each plant is very scarce. Veneering is an ancient woodworking technique that involves applying a thinner layer of fine wood to a substrate of normal-quality walnut wood; fine walnut wood is harvested from trees grown specifically for this purpose, it is then cut into thin sheets whose thickness varies from 1 to 2 millimeters, in the case of our nightstands this thickness is higher; the base wood is prepared by applying a special glue then we proceed manually and uniformly with the application of the fine walnut sheets; after this processing the whole is pressed and allowed to dry, allowing the glue to adhere firmly between the fine walnut wood and the substrate, creating a stable veneer; this once dry, is finished with sanding, polishing and the application of protective finishes, such as varnishes or oils, to improve the appearance and durability of the wood. The history of veneering goes back many centuries; it is believed to have been first used in ancient Egypt and China. Over the centuries, this technique has spread throughout the world and has continued to evolve, becoming an important part of the production of high-quality furniture, luxury items, and objets d'art. This ancient technique, applied to our nightstands, has made it possible to enhance the colors, flaming, and grain of fine flamed walnut.
