An American Arts & Crafts era fluted and flaring copper lotus dish by Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972), a gifted American metalsmith, jeweler and designer working in New York City at the turn of the 20th century. This art metal design can also be displayed as a shallow bowl or used as a vide poche; the piece comes directly from Zimmermann's estate, dating circa 1915 to the period she maintained a workshop studio and showroom at the National Arts Club at Gramercy Park.
This simple and abstracted lotus blossom form composed of eight flaring petals with pointed tips resembles designs from the Chinese T'ang dynasty (618-906 CE) and illustrates Zimmermann's skill interpreting historical design sources for her clients. Two similar examples of Zimmermann's fluted floriform designs for a dish and shallow bowl are illustrated on page 290 in The Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmermann, 2012.
The piece is in very good original condition with a few shallow scratches and a reflective, original patina that has darkened in some areas more than others. Marked M. ZIMMERMANN MAKER over an MZ artist's cipher underfoot, measuring 10.38 in. diameter.
Provenance: The Estate of Marie Zimmermann. less
