A matching set of six Arts and Crafts period fluted and flaring copper dishes / chargers by Marie Zimmermann (1879-1972), a gifted American metalsmith, jeweler and designer working in New York City during the opening decades of the 20th century. The set comes directly from the Zimmermann estate, dating circa 1915 to the period she maintained a workshop studio and showroom at the National Arts Club at Gramercy Park.
This simple and abstracted lotus blossom form features eight flaring petals with pointed tips resembling designs from the Chinese T'ang dynasty (618-906 CE), illustrating Zimmermann's ability to interpret historical design sources for her clientele. Each remain in very good original condition with textured, hammered surfaces and naturally darkened patinas, each marked M. ZIMMERMANN MAKER over her MZ artist's cipher underfoot, measuring 10.38 in. diameter. Two similar examples of Zimmermann's fluted floriform designs for a dish and bowl are illustrated on page 290 in The Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmermann, 2012.
