Heart shaped symbolic image featuring two shaking hands, one in Kimono and the other in Western sleeve, all above a laurel branch, the symbol of peace and prosperity
It commemorates the opening of Japan toward the Western world and the USA after the diplomatic expeditions of Commodore Mathew Perry in 1852-1856
Carved during the period or shortly after the expeditions, found in New England
