Description: Ohara Koson, aka Shoson, aka Hoson 小原古邨 (1877-1945) was a Japanese painter and woodblock print artist of the early 20th … more Ohara Koson, aka Shoson, aka Hoson 小原古邨 (1877-1945) was a Japanese painter and woodblock print artist of the early 20th century Shin Hanga movement. He is known as a master of kacho-e, or bird-and-flower prints. His earliest designs were published by Daikokuya (Matsuki Heikichi) and Kokkeido under the name Koson. In 1926, he started working with the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo and changed his name to Shoson. In the early 1930s, he collaborated with Sakai Kawaguchi and changed his name again to Hoson. Koson's woodblock print are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston .

This print is a first-edition, published by Daikokuya. The same edition of this design is held in the collection of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
