It was located in the town of Lambeth, hence the name Doulton Lambeth. While there, Doulton became actively involved with the Lambeth School of Art and recruited their talented artists to design for his company. He was known to have allowed them full artistic freedom resulting in the superb, unique handcrafted art pottery for which Doulton is synonymous. Doulton’s wares were so well recognized and sought after that in 1901, King Edward VII introduced the grant of the royal warrant. This piece is impressed with the Royal Doulton Circle, Crown and Lion mark used from 1902-1922 as well as numbered and signed. The artist initials are LB, and can most likely be attributed to LF Bowen. This Arts and Crafts style stoneware vase has a salt glaze with mottled hues of blues, greens and browns, indicative of Doulton Lambeth. The decorative band towards the top of the vase ( introduced by Hannah Barlow) is sgraffito with a rose motif. less
