A single 6" x 6" (1/2" thick), glazed antique fireplace surround tile. Made by the Cambridge Tile Company, Covington, Kentucky.
The company was founded in 1887 but in the 1930's, new owners moved the company to Hartwell, Ohio. It ceased business in 1986. "Cambridge", is marked on the back of the tile. There is no date. It was likely made in the 1920's. There is an article about the company online in the 2009 November/December volume of the, "Bulletin of the Kenton County Historical Society", Covington, Kentucky.
The tile is light blue, tan, cream and white. The pattern contains leaves, a circular scroll and 3 curled waves. The glazing and colors are beautiful and would look beautiful framed, used as a trivet or as decor in a bathroom or fireplace mantle.
Purchased by Clover's Cottage at an estate sale in Charlotte, NC. We were advised by family members that family lore was the tiles had been installed when the house was built in the 1920's and retained by the family after the house was subsequently renovated. less
