The candlesticks were decorative supports used in churches or private churches to support candles or lamps during religious services. These torch holders were typically made of high quality wood, usually walnut or mahogany, and decorated with carved and gilded patterns in the Empire style. The design of the torch holders was characterized by a circular base which supported a slender shaft. The gilding of the torches was done by applying gold leaves, which gave them a luxurious and refined look. These torch holders were very popular in Sicily during the mid 19th century when the Empire style was very much in vogue. Today these torch holders are considered works of art and are highly sought after by collectors and antique enthusiasts.
