This large electroplated silver 'Old English' antique soup ladle is 12.5 inches in length with a long curved handle and generously-sized oval bowl which also makes it useful for serving punch. The reverse side of the handle is clearly marked with Spink & Son / B / EP
Spink & Son is the silver maker. The letters EP signify electroplated silver. Letter B is the British quality rating for silver plated works and signifies average / good quality (rather than superior).

Made in England. Although the ladle has not been precisely dated, it is believed to be from circa 1900-1920's.

PATTERN: The Old English flatware pattern first emerged in Britain around 1760 and was one of a handful of antique patterns that dominated 18th century silver flatware design in Britain. Although the height of its popularity was at the end of the century, prominent British silver flatware producers continued to use this uncopyrighted pattern, including several variants of the original, throughout the 19th century and well into the 20th.
Spink & Son was founded by
MAKER: John Spink began his goldsmith apprenticeship in London in 1666 and soon thereafter opened his business as a goldsmith and pawnbroker. By the time Spink & Son firm was established tin the late 18th century, it was dealing with a variety of metal-based works including , coins, medals and jewelry, as well as art. It later developed into one of the world's top collectables auction houses (specializing in stamps, coins, bank notes, bonds, autographs, books, wine, metal works, art and antiques, and more). Although ownership has changed several times, it is still in business today.
