A wonderful estate sale find many years ago from the estate of a diplomat who spent a major part of his career living in Japan. He amassed an impressive collection of Japanese antiquities during his tenure.

The bowl is hand decorated in earth tones of Sienna, brown, ivory and gold. The center features 3 figures in royal dress. An emperor, perhaps and his wife, with a third person kneeling before them and holding a Samurai sword. The robes are embellished with a subtle application of gold.

Size of bowl is 9.5” diameter and 3” high

The signature on the underside indicates an origin of Kaga, Japan in the Satsuma style.
From Meiji period 1867 - 1892.



I have researched literally hundreds of bowl on multiple sites, and have not turned up another quite like this. I am not knowledgeable about Japanese antiquities, but I have consulted with some who are. We believe it to be a high quality piece.

This is from my personal collection. Over the years I've amassed a rather large collection. This piece is a great favorite. However, I am succumbing to the need for smaller living quarters, and have no room to keep all these beautiful things.

Condition: Excellent. No chips or cracks. No loss of gold trim. less
