The Three Graces Greek mythology (Euphrosyne, Aglaia, and Thalia)
Attributed to Jean Baptist Stahl for Mettlach
Piece is marked with the Abbey Mark used 1882 - 1931. Also marked Mettlach and VB for Villeroy & Boch. In addition, it bears an impressed US PATENT, which as far as I can determine, was required for any item intended for hanging on a wall, and for being imported to the US.
Also, the word GESCHUTZ, a German phrase that translates to "legally protected" or "copyrighted."
Jean Baptist Stahl was the inventor of the Phanolith process. Phanolith is a porcelain That combines the characteristics of jasper ware and pate-sur-pate. Developed at the Villeroy & Boch factory in Mettlach, Germany toward the end of the 19th century. The Phanolith first came into the spotlight at the 1900 World's Fair in Paris.
