This is a great piece. I have had a few Doris Riker Beer paintings in the past and they are always quick sellers. When I saw this painting, I was shocked at the size of it. I have never had a Beer painting that was bigger than 3 or 4 inches. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included her biography below. This is a "massive" painting for the artist. Watercolor on paper measuring 7 1/2 x 10 inches. You can see her signature in pencil just below the matte lower right. Painting is in outstanding as painted condition. Archival double matte and original frame. On the back is the original label that would have come with the painting. Frame measures 18 3/4 x 18 1/4 inches. Really just a beautiful presentation of this stunning large original painting. Do your research on this work. Works this big by Doris Beer rarely come to market.
For those not familiar with the artist her biography from Nantucket Historical Society reads: "Based in the Wharfhead Studio on Old North Wharf after moving to town from ’Sconset in 1940, Doris and her husband Richard produced a well-known series of watercolor miniatures featuring popular Nantucket scenes. The couple frequently worked together on these copyrighted creations, photo-duplicating Doris’s line sketch and Doris and Richard completing the watercolor. Wharfhead Studio consisted of living quarters and an exhibition space at dock level, out of which the couple operated for an eighteen-year span. Doris’s work was praised by a reviewer as “calm, limpid, but crisply executed with an economy of line.” less
