This is just a great original piece. I have known of Clifford Ross for many years as I saw one … more This is just a great original piece. I have known of Clifford Ross for many years as I saw one of his early photography exhibitions. What I didnt know about him was that he started as a painter studying and influenced by his aunt Helen Frankenthaler. That is one of the things that makes this painting so appealing. You can see his aunt's influence so much in this work. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. This is a stunning Oil and ink on paper measuring 4 1/8 x 8 1/2 inches. Signed lower right. In perfect as painted condition. The painting is floated in an archival gallery matte and frame. Wood frame measures 8 3/4 x 13 inches. On the back of the frame is the original exhibition label from his show in 1980 at O'Reilly Salander in New York. Just a great complete presentation. About as good an early painting you are going to find by this very important 20-21st Century artist.

For those not familiar with the artist his biography from a gallery that offers the artist's work reads: "Born in New York City to Alfred and Gloria Ross, Ross earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Art History from Yale University in 1974, and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1973. After his college years, his painting was influenced by Abstract Expressionism and the Color Field School, which included his aunt, Helen Frankenthaler. In 1980, he broke off his relationship with Clement Greenberg and many of the artists around him, with the exception of his aunt, with whom he maintained a close relationship throughout her life. Following his early career in painting and sculpture, Ross began his photographic work in 1995. A major milestone in his work is the Hurricane series, begun in 1996. The black and white images in the series depict large-scale ocean waves shot by Ross while in the tumultuous surf, often up to his chest, and tethered to an assistant on land. less
