This is a great piece. This is one of those paintings I bought without knowing exactly who the artist was. Between the inscription on the back and the signature on the front, I knew I would be able to figure it out. After a few minutes I came to my senses and realized it was the work of Norway and New York artist Torild Stray. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included her biography below. This is really a stunning contemporary Abstract Expressionist view of the quite island off the coast of Norway at night. Oil on wood panel measuring 11 3/4 x 18 1/4 inches. Signed and dated lower right corner. Painting is in outstanding as painted condition. Really clean and vibrant. On the back of the wood panel is the artist's description about where and when it was painted. There is also an inscription by the artist when she gave the painting to someone in 2012. Painting is floated in complimentary wood frame measuring 13 x 19 1/4 inches. Really just a great presentation of this wonderful Norway/New York artist. Do your own research on the artist. Her work is currently part of an exhibition at Hoyersten Contemporary in Norway that just closed.
For those not familiar with the artist, her biography from a gallery that sells the artist's work reads: "Torild Stray has held exhibitions of her art work in New York and Norway since the early 1990s. Her vision and commitment as a painter has brought her critical acclaim and a strong international following of collectors. She has been the recipient of many awards and scholarships, including The Angus Gund Scholarship, The New York Times Scholarship, The Scandinavian Society Cultural Award, a Charles Revson Fellowship and The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Artist in Residence Program where she was granted permission to paint NYC from the 85th floor of the World Trade Center. Following extensive travels in South East Asia with a long stay in Tibet Stray attended The University of Bergen, The Nordic School of Art in Finland and The New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting & Sculpture. Stray currently resides and works in Brooklyn, NY, where she holds an active studio." less
