This is a great piece. I recently got an opportunity to purchase some works from the estate of Donald Hugo Stoltenberg. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. This is one of 2 outstanding original Stoltenberg paintings I am offering right now. Two works from 2 of the best locations in Massachusetts. This is a very early work by the artist of a the Provincetown Church. A wonderful modernist anstracted view. Watercolor and gouache and graphite on paper measuring 12 x 9 inches. Painting is in excellent condition with virtually no fading. A few very faint spots but otherwise really a great view. Artist's estate stamp verso as well as the painting details in the artist's hand. Unframed. Really an incredible view of Provincetown. If you collect Stoltenberg, check my store for the other example I am also selling. And if you like Provincetown and the Cape and Islands, check my store for the rare large Doris Beer painting I am also selling as well as other works.
For those not familiar with the artist his biography from askart reads: "Donald Hugo "Don" Stoltenberg was an American painter and author. He attended public grade school in Chicago, and High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Visual Design Art from the Institute of Design of the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1953. Upon graduation, he took a position as graphic designer working under famed illustrator and industrial designer Raymond Loewy. Following a relocation to Boston in 1954, he worked as a graphic designer at Container Corporation of America. In 1960, he set up an art studio on Commercial Wharf, a former fishing pier on the Boston waterfront where he became a full-time painter. This location would inspire his lifelong love for and dedication to marine art, with a focus on both sailing and steam powered coastal and ocean vessels, most notably, the classic ocean liners of the 20th century. For the next decade he would focus on honing his craft, painting a variety of subjects, nautical and otherwise, in an abstract expressionist style. less
