This is just a great original piece. I have not bought an Antoni Clave work in many years. Early in … more This is just a great original piece. I have not bought an Antoni Clave work in many years. Early in my career they were easier to buy but lately they have become much harder to acquire. For those not familiar with the artist I have included his biography below. This is one of the nicer works I have seen by Clave. It is a large colored etching. Image measures 19 1/4 x 27 1/4 inches on complete original sheet measuring 22 x 30 inches. Signed in pencil lower right and numbered from an edition of 80 lower left. The L'Oevree Gravee publishing blindstamp just below the numbering. Print is in outstanding as printed condition. Really very fine example of the artist's printed work. The print has been floated against what I believe is an archival backing and hung in original period reddish gold frame. A great presentation. Frame measures 31 x 38 1/2 inches. If you are going to reframe it, happy to take the print out of the frame and mail it to you in a tube for much less. Just let me know.

For those not familiar with the artist, his biography from a gallery that sells his work reads: "Painter, printmaker, sculptor, and designer Antoni Clavé was born in Barcelona, Spain, on April 5, 1913. His first introduction into creative design was as an apprentice at a textile shop that specialized in corsets. Soon, he began taking night classes at the School of Fine Arts and Crafts, Barcelona under Angel Ferrant and Felix Mestres. Additional work through the 1920s included poster design for the Cinematografica Nacional Espanola, Spain's national film industry. With the onset of the Spanish Civil War he was drafted to fight on the Aragon front for the Republican Army, before his friend Joaquim Marti Bas secured him a position as a propaganda artist for the government. Upon the fall of Barcelona to Franco's army in 1936, he, along with most of the Catalan population, fled to France and was held in a detention camp for several months before being released, with only his art and a few francs to his name. His first show took place in Perpignan and featured the works he created in the detention camp. In April of 1939, he finally arrived in Paris; however, the Germans had, too, and his early attempts at exhibition in the art capital of the world were thwarted by the panic of encroaching war. less
