This is a wonderful original. When I first saw this work, I thought it was incredible. I wasnt familiar with the artist but just thought the combination of collage and abstract drawing was so good. After figuring out who the artist was, I was even more excited to buy them. Richard Hamwi has been an artist for his entire life and a professor of art at Albright College in Pennsylvania for over 20 years. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. This is really a wonderful original work. The image measures 7 x 7 inches and is in outstanding as created condition. The collage is connected to the backing. Signed, dated, and titled in pencil below the image. Archival matte and metal frame are a wonderful compliment and ready to hang. Really an outstanding presentation. Do your own research on the artist. His works are in the permanent collections of museums like the Smithsonian and the Phillips. In fact this work is just like the work you can see on the Phillips collection website. Frame measures 16 x 14 3/4 inches. If you collect the artist's work, check my store for the other example I am also selling. A wonderful pair that would look great hung together.
For those not familiar with the artist his biography from an exhibition of the artist's work reads: "My approach to drawing and painting explores variations on themes derived from nature and experience. Each piece initially evolves from a feeling or a conceived image, although a more individual theme unfolds according to the nature of my thoughts and feelings during the process of realizing the image. My primary visual concerns are the relationships among shape, tone, and color during the process of creating each piece.I believe the nature of an image is determined primarily by the manner in which these elements interact. I also find inspiration in the work of other artists. I am usually interested in particular aspects of another artist's work. It may be the originality of the image, the sense of color, formal clarity, calligraphic expressiveness, or compositional structure. The use of the collage and construction with paper often provides means by which I am able to find more meaningful and complex formal relationships. I think of drawing and collage as being intimately related. Matisse said, "Collage is drawing with scissors. "That I maintain a sense of adventure is central to the life of my work. I find challenge and joy in creating images that may imply sources of inspiration, such as landscape, architecture, music and poetry." less
