This lovely tabletop sculpture belonged to my Mom who is now 101 and she always had it sitting on a small end table in our home when I was a young child.
As you can see the carrier of the matches swings forward to dump a few matches into the gully on top. Matches were probably much thicker when this was made and so with current kitchen matches being thinner it can drop more than one at a time.
Item will be carefully wrapped and packaged to prevent damage during transit.
Substantial weight and a great conversation piece that even serves a function as a dispensor for wooden matches. Terrific for pipe smokers and Dog lovers.
Scotties—formally called Scottish Terriers or Aberdeen Terriers—were developed in Scotland as "ratters"—dogs bred to capture and kill rats around the home or on a farm. The first reference to them was in literature published in 1432. In the Seventeenth Century, English painter Joshua Reynolds included a Scottie in a portrait of a young girl.
In America, Scotties grew in popularity during the first third of the Twentieth Century. In the Twenties and Thirties, many famous world leaders and Hollywood celebrities had Scotties: Queen Victoria, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Julie Andrews. The most famous Scottie of all was Fala, the beloved pet of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and George W. Bush each owned Scotties.
This Art Deco cast bronze wood matches holder / dispensor from the Thirties or Forties, was made at the zenith of the Scottie craze in America. Quite handsome and the design on the match holder base scream Art Deco
WONDERFUL GIFT ITEM for Scottish Terriers lovers
