Based on a 2004, original oil painting by Eric Zener, a nationally acclaimed and internationally exhibited artist. The portrait and giclee series were commissioned by Michael Phelps’ sports agency, Octagon, as part of a post-Olympics national swim tour. Prints are in Phelps’ personal collection. Seller negotiated the joint venture transaction for the various parties and held the prints until now.

Eric Zener, paints swimmers and the body in motion in water. He uses water as a metaphor for personal transformation and other narratives.

Michael Phelps won 8 medals overall with 6 gold medal wins in 2004. He holds the title for the most medals in any single event in the modern Olympic Games, including 28 medals, 23 gold, across 5 olympics.

Powerful, yet graceful, Phelps is at one with his sport and the universality of water. The figure’s arms are outstretched in the shape of victory, gold light reflects in his goggles, his hands break through the water and hence are refracted.

Painted in the cool hue of blues and green, against the warm gold and flesh tone, bubbles center the image, with a white water jet in the distance.

The image is more than a commissioned portrait, it is an artistic expression of the possibility that with discipline, persistence, one can realize a breakthrough. The image advances the proposition that lifelong dreams can come true.
