Lepage was a naturalistic painter, and his depiction of sarah bernhardt (1844-1923) was captured by waltner in a large-format etching. The actress sarah bernhardt is depicted in profile. She is sitting upright on a bed/canapé. Her sumptuous, long-sleeved dress and long fur stole give her an elegant appearance. She wears a knotted silk scarf around her neck, which seems to float slightly. In her hands she holds a small statuette of orpheus standing and playing a lyre. The background of the painting blends painterly with the seated figure. less
