Three miniature pieces of millefiori murrine glass vases are similar to those made by Fratelli Toso around the turn of the century. They are not marked nor have any attributions nor provenance that relate to Murano glass. They are both attractive and interesting, and very similar in style, and evidently handblown. My appreciation for Murano Glass is heightened by my visit to a Murano glass factory on Murano Island. At that time, I do not see Fratelli Toso miniatures in the museum display. All three are of different shapes, designs and colors. One, in the form of a pouring vessel has a single handle and the others have two. The largest piece has a glossy finish and the other two have a matte finish.
The largest is a 4.5 inches tall, 3 inches diameter bulbous vase with a bottle neck, made of blue, white, yellow murrine rods.. The base has a nice dimple puntel. The two ear-shaped handles are delicate.
The second is a 2.5 inches tall, 3.5 inches diameter round handled bowl, made of purple and yellow murrine rods with star shaped patterns,
The smallest is a 3 inch tall, 1.5 inch diameter pouring vessel made of red, white, and yellow murrine rods with a single delicate glass strand for a handle.
During my visit to one of the Murano Glass Factory, the proprietor spoke honestly about how the Chinese have purchased Murano glass factories and blatantly used Murano labels on their Chinese made products and some many are sold in Venetian gift shops. However, I can say there is no fear about these three being reproductions because they are small in size and rather labor intensive to make.
