delicious pair of sanguine engravings with allegorical representations, designed by the french artist jean-baptiste huet and printed by the engraver c. L. Jubier. Two allegorical images of offerings, one to friendship and the other to hope, both made with the sanguine technique, a pencil made with hematite, which gives it its characteristic reddish sepia tone reminiscent of the color of blood.
“offrande à l’amitié” or offering to friendship presents a classically dressed female figure carrying a basket of roses to a statue of an angel with a dog. Another female figure appears next to him. They both look at the statue of the boy with the dog, a symbol of friendship and loyalty. At their feet appear burning hearts pierced by an arrow. A little further down, a sheep appears, typical iconography of christ the lamb of god. It refers to the constant presence of religion in all aspects of life.
“offrande à l’esperance” or offering to hope again presents the same female figure as in the previous engraving, this time with a basket of roses as well as some little angels. Crouching, a male figure appears holding a dove and some flower crowns. They are making an offering to a statue of a seated woman with an anchor at her feet. Behind the female figure appears an angel holding a burning stake, repeating the fire motif that also appeared in the other engraving in the series.
these prints are an original design by french artist jean-baptiste marie huet. He was an 18th-century french artist, known primarily for his paintings of landscapes, pastoral scenes, and animals. He was born in paris in 1745 and died in 1811. Huet was especially skilled in the depiction of animals, and his works often feature countryside scenes with sheep, cows, goats, and other animals in natural settings. His style is characterized by being delicate and detailed, and was very influential in his time. Huet also worked as a tapestry designer and collaborated with the manufacture des gobelins in paris. His work continues to be appreciated for its beauty and its ability to capture 18th-century french rural life.
