Vintage large mid century authentic hand painted and signed 4 panel framed Japanese mountainous landscape byōbu artwork. Japanese screens (byōbu) are exquisitely beautiful emblems of wealth and power dating all the way back to Six Dynasties China (220-589 AD). Motifs changed over time but these intricate pieces were often given as gifts. In the 16th century there was a growth in the application of metal foils, particularly gold. This piece in particular features a whimsical Japanese mountainous landscape with village homes and boats, offset by a gold textured background with hints of red. It has the original artist signature in the lower right hand corner of the art. The panels are set in a folding wooden frame with a beige fabric border. The corners and sides of the wooden frame have lovely hand hammered and carved brass detailing. The back is covered in a patterned fabric (with some imperfections - see photos) The front and the framing, however, are in excellent condition! It can be displayed standing or hung on a wall! And it's panels fold up nicely for easy storage and moving.
