This is a 20th Century Martin Maddox Chinoiserie highboy secretary desk that is painted in an ebony ground with a gold and pearlized canton style motif. The highboy structure serves as a canvas for the intricate chinoiserie artwork that adorns its surface. The tapestry of hand-painted scenes unfold across the desk, depicting enchanting landscapes, vibrant flora, and delicate birds in flight in gold and opal hues. .
The functionality of the secretary desk is seamlessly integrated into its design, with a fold-down writing surface revealing an interior fitted with compartments and drawers, providing storage space for documents, stationery, and other essentials (key included). Additionally the piece provides five drawers of storage on the top and bottom of the desk / chest. This piece is in excellent vintage condition.
