The craftsman applies antique mirrors, in this case circa 1900, to newer, sturdier reclaimed wood. The gilt wood baguette frame with rose medallion corners is a hallmark of the Directoire period. During this period, furniture and ornaments stressed elongated, simple shapes with clear lines reflecting Neoclassical forms and motifs. This style was sparse and ornamentation was based mostly on ancient Roman objects recovered from excavations at Pompeii. This was the last phase of the Louis XVI style.
