Joseph Petitot is a French portrait artist born in 1771 in Heuilley-sur-Saône in Burgundy, he died in 1844 in Belley in Ain.
from 1789 he stayed mainly in Geneva, where he painted numerous pastel portraits of the local lower middle class. Present at the Society of Arts exhibition of 1798. Left for Ain in 1800, he stayed in Belley in 1803, appointed as drawing master at the college of Nantua. He made several stays in Geneva and in the canton of Vaud between 1814 and 1822. A good portraitist, capturing a population in the reality of their social condition. This piece has an attribution mark,
