The industry dates to 1779, when Franciscan missionaries under the direction of Father Junipero Serra planted the first vineyard at Mission San Juan Capistrano. Between 1779 and 1781, 2,000 grapevines were planted at the mission! Father Serra would found eight other California missions, becoming the "Father of California Wine".
This lovely oil on board painting for California Wines shows rows of growing vines, a bounty of red and green grapes in the corner, wine barrels in another corner, and bright yellow California poppies in the third corner. The painting measures 16 inches tall and 20 inches wide and is framed in a black and gold frame to a size of approximately 19 inches tall and 23 inches wide.
