- This large and striking acrylic-on-board painting was done by influential California artist Leon Saulter (1908-1986) in 1965 and titled "The … more This large and striking acrylic-on-board painting was done by influential California artist Leon Saulter (1908-1986) in 1965 and titled "The Burden." In 2020 his remaining works from his studio were donated to charity via a non-profit thrift shop in Culver City, CA where I was lucky to have the first pick; of this collection of 10 or so paintings, this work was by far my favorite, for its rich, vibrant colors and emotionally evocative subject matter. An address, likely that of his former studio, is handwritten on the back of the board along with the title, adding personal connection to the piece. This is a stunning work on its own merits, but add to that the fact that it was painted in LA in 1965 during one of the most culturally impactful art/music scenes in modern times, and this is a piece that will be sure to inspire lively conversations wherever it finds a home. less
